1to9 is a series that explores the poetics of numbers and the imagery they evoke through associative perception. It examines how numerals relate to words, everyday objects, and visual metaphors, connecting numerical forms to sensory and symbolic meanings.

Inspired by the English savant Daniel Tammet, who experiences numbers as vivid shapes, motions, and textures, this project embraces a way of seeing where calculation becomes intuition and form becomes meaning. As Tammet describes, numbers transform and interact visually, revealing answers as emergent imagery rather than logical steps.

My interest in the imagery of numbers stems from a personal relationship shaped by dyslexia and dyscalculia. Numbers have long been elusive to me, difficult to process and easy to misread. Yet paradoxically, I find myself drawn to them, not through logic or calculation but through intuition. I engage with numbers less as abstract symbols and more as forms I feel my way around. This intuitive approach opens a space where numbers shed their rigidity and become poetic, sensorial, even emotional. By reimagining numbers through visual and metaphorical associations, I seek to translate a cognitive challenge into an artistic language. It is an attempt to invite others to perceive numbers not as barriers but as portals into an altered way of sensing the world.

1to9 invites reflection on how perception, emotion, and imagination can transform even the most rational of symbols. Rather than offering definitions, the works suggest and evoke, allowing numbers to take on new and unexpected dimensions.

about the artist /

Sookoon Ang is an artist working across various mediums, whose practice navigates the intangible spaces between the physical and metaphysical realms. Rooted in the philosophy of impermanence, her practice reflects an ongoing dialogue between existential inquiry and material experimentation. Through poetic combinations of seemingly contradictory elements, she creates works that evoke a subtle tension, inviting viewers to question their own perceptions of reality. Ang’s nuanced approach transforms everyday objects and imagery into contemplative, often dreamlike explorations of psychological and emotional landscapes.

Her installations, sculptures, and moving images have been exhibited in major international institutions, including the Palais de Tokyo, M+ Museum in Hong Kong, and the Singapore Biennale, offering audiences a space to engage with the transient nature of existence. Ang’s work blurs the boundaries between fact and fiction, reality and fantasy, crafting immersive visual experiences that feel suspended between worlds. Her focus on flux, temporality, and the instability of identity is informed by her cross-cultural perspective and the ongoing navigation of displacement and belonging, stemming from a migratory background.

A recipient of prestigious fellowships such as the Freeman Fellowship and Asia-Pacific Fellowship, Ang has undertaken residencies at renowned institutions like the Rijksakademie, Kunstlerhaus Bethanien and ISCP. Her films and video works have been screened at significant platforms, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, and Festival of Films on Art, Montreal. With a practice that embraces the inherent unpredictability of process and the fluidity of material transformation, Sookoon Ang continues to challenge the conventions of artistic expression, creating work that is as intellectually rigorous as it is emotionally resonant.
